Sonoma County Fair Dedicates Hall of Flowers to U.C. Master Gardeners Program of Sonoma County
The Sonoma County Fair is pleased to dedicate the 2017 Hall of Flowers to a group of people with miracles at their fingertips. The U.C. Master Gardeners Program of Sonoma County is a group of University of California trained and certified green-thumbs extraordinaire. They are teachers, volunteers and nature lovers who year-after-year bring the sweet sights and smells of great abundance to the Fair and to our community.
The UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County was formed in 1981 and the group’s volunteers have been working miracles of beauty at the Sonoma County Fair since 1982. Master Gardeners undergo extensive UC training and then fan out into local neighborhoods to provide unbiased, high quality, science-based information to home gardeners. They are volunteers who offer the delightful combination of technical knowledge and gardening artistry. From soil and plant nutrition to irrigation to home composting, disease control, food gardening, best planting tips, landscaping, pesticide use alternatives, and more.
“The demonstration garden at the Sonoma County Fair is a core undertaking for our organization every year” says Mimi Enright of the U.C. Master Gardeners Program of Sonoma County. “It’s also one of the venues where our group makes the most contact with the public, we typically engage with several thousand people over the course of the Fair.”
The group’s garden theme always centers on sustainable gardening practices. Located just outside the Hall of Flowers, in the Garden Courtyard, the Master Gardeners’ garden is a must stop to learn about proper plant selection, water conservation and capture, composting, and integrated pest management. It’s also a real treat for the senses and a prime spot for guests to relax and enjoy amid the bustle of the Fair.
“We love to show just how beautiful a low water use, sustainable garden can be!” says Enright.
The Sonoma County Fair Board is honored to dedicate the 2017 Hall of Flowers to U.C. Master Gardeners of Sonoma County Program in recognition of their longstanding commitment to the Fair and to home gardeners throughout our community.
